Insurance Commissioner Steve Poizner released regulations permitting and authorizing mileage verification for pay-as-you-drive, without dictating what form such plans must take.

A plan that might take shape is something offered from MileMeter, a Texas company who began selling insurance based on how many miles you drive. Basically each mile is a credit.

However some people have mixed feelings. Since there must be a GPS unit in the car to track miles, people worry about their privacy. Some also dont want their rental cars billed by the mile.
